Cystopteris
Bladder Ferns

Mostly small, deciduous ferns. Rhizome in some species is long with leaves arising singly; in others it is short with leaves in tufts; leaves 2-4 pinnate, thin, delicate; sori rounded; indusium present, flap-like, curling back to expose sporangia as it matures.

About 20 species worldwide, in temperate zones and mountainous areas of the tropics. 4 species in Britain, 2 in Ireland. Another species, C. alpina, was last recorded in Britain in the early 20th century.
