Rhizomes extensive, subterranean, creeping, scaleless, hairy. Fronds arising singly; blades 2-4 pinnate; sori almost continuous along margins of pinnules, enclosed by rolled-under leaf margin; margins of infertile leaves also rolled under.
Worldwide distribution; previously thought to be just one species; number of species and subspecies under active research. One species in Britain with at least one highly distinct subspecies.
