Shield Ferns

Small to medium-large terrestrial ferns. Rhizome short, very scaly. Leaves in tufts, more or less evergreen; ususally 1-3 pinnate, rarely more; in many species pinnae have an upward-pointing lobe at base; veins free; sori round, in one or two rows; indusium peltate when present.

About 180 species worldwide. Three species native in Britain and Ireland, one species introduced and naturalised in Britain.
